COSTA RICA – TILARAN

March 2-7, 2024

Pierre’s asthma was acting up since El Salvador. His usual charge up the hill was replaced with wheezing, coughing and needing breaks. We spent more time than usual just resting in our room trying to heal his lungs. We went to a pharmacy and got some medication that has slowed the constant coughing, but not halted it. He also got a steroid shot. At the time of writing this, his breathing has improved.

The Swimming with the Wind guesthouse was one of the nicest we had come across, so it was a pleasant stay. It was spacious with lots of windows and a washing machine in the back. It even had a garden. There was a decent grocery store 50 feet away.

The part of town we were in was on a hill. The landlady lived on the left and she had to go up stairs to get into her house. Our guesthouse was on the right (red roof) and we had to go down the stairs to get inside.

There were always kids playing outside. Every now and then we would kick a soccer ball with them. They had a rugged swing set up over the sidewalk.

When Pierre was finally felling better, we went for a walk up to Cerro Tovar, Parque del Viento. It is a tall cross on a hill overlooking the town. It was lit up at night, but was too far off to get a decent picture.

It wasn’t far but it still a bit strenuous. The view was really nice. We could see the town

and the surrounding countryside.

We were surprised to see how many wind turbines there were.

We saw repurposed turbine blades used as fences, gate posts and welcome signs.

We did go downtown for some extra groceries that our little shop did not have and to go to the pharmacy. We saw this church but it was not opened.

Our guesthouse hostess allowed us to spend a couple extra days, at a reduced rate, to let Pierre rest. She was so sweet, and checked on us everyday. When we finally did leave, she insisted that her husband drive us to the bus.

We were off to Monteverde….
